Sally wasn’t sure what to say. She had met Cath before, so she couldn’t just fill the silence with a ‘nice to meet you’. Her first instinct had been to offer congratulations, but was that appropriate? Yes, she was going to have a baby, but then she was just going to give it away to Killian and Colin. After a beat, all she could come up with was, ‘You look well.’

Cath smiled and nodded.

‘Thanks. Feeling OK now. It wasn’t too great there for a while.’

‘No. We had fierce morning sickness, didn’t we?’ Colin was pouring cups of tea at the breakfast bar. Cath giggled her agreement. Sally was fairly sure that if she was in Cath’s position she would have punched Colin, or at the very least pointed out that we had done nothing at all.

‘Where’s Killian?’ Sally asked. He had been the one to text her, asking her to come over.

‘Apologies. He’s on his way. He lost track of time – you know what’s he’s like. You don’t take sugar, do you?

Sally leaned forward to take her cup of tea. ‘No thanks. This is perfect.’ She wasn’t sure if she had imagined it but she thought Cath had reacted slightly at the mention of Killian’s name. Not for the first time, she asked herself what on earth this woman Cath was getting out of the arrangement. If you wanted to have a baby, surely you’d want to keep it? Unless they were going to be some modern trio of parents. Sally had no idea how that might work and no inclination to ask.

‘Did Killian show you the scan?’ Colin was asking.

‘No.’

‘Oh, would you like to see it?’ His voice had gone up an octave as if he was about to unveil a tiny unicorn.

Sally knew that this wasn’t really a question and if it was, the only possible response was yes.

‘Yes please,’ she said with a great deal more enthusiasm than she felt. Cath folded her hands in her lap and composed her face into what Sally thought Cath might imagine to be a saint-like expression. This was her moment.

Colin held out a blurry image. Sally thought she knew what she was looking at, even though the head did seem strangely large. Again she struggled to come up with an appropriate response. She settled on ‘That’s amazing!’ because no matter what you thought about the unborn child, the technology that delivered the image was very impressive.

‘Thank you,’ Cath purred, with just the hint of a blush. ‘I can’t wait to meet her.’

Sally felt something shift, and her emotions were untethered for a moment. She couldn’t explain why knowing the sex should make this whole scenario harder for her to deal with, but there was no denying that it did.

‘A little girl?’ There was a croak in her voice and she feared that she might not be able to control herself. She stood abruptly.

‘Will I put the kettle on?’ she asked, turning her back on Colin and Cath and heading towards the sink.
